Marissa LaMadrid, Ph.D.
Principal Scientist
Dr. Marissa LaMadrid, a physicist, is responsible for building the platforms of education, research, and technology integration for SCPI. Dr. LaMadrid has over 20 years of exceptionally broad-based expertise in the areas of condensed matter physics, biophysics, genomics, microbiology, software engineering, bioinformatics and stem cell research.
Dr. LaMadrid has held fellowships in the Physics and Applied Physics Departments at Caltech, and in the Physiology, Biophysics, and Genome Science Departments at the University of Washington. Her physics research involved ultra-high resolution thermodynamic measurements that led to the discovery of previously unobserved phase transitions in growing thin films. Her applied physics work contributed to the development of bulk metallic glasses, materials that behave like liquid metals. Her biology-based research involved 1) developing novel methods and instrumentation for studying muscle contraction and cardiac disease at the single molecule level, 2) creating new algorithms for sensitive genomic data analysis and 3) finding novel stem cell binding receptors.
Dr. LaMadrid also volunteers towards science education in Seattle schools through talks, demonstrations, liaison work, and science fair judging.
Dr. LaMadrid has authored or co-authored 18 publications on a broad range of topics spanning physics and biology. She received a B.S. in Physics, cum laude, from the University of the Philippines and an M.S. and Ph.D in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
